Khajuraho Dance Festival – a globally acclaimed event organised by Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad in association with Department of Culture Government of Madhya Pradesh, and sponsored by Madhya Pradesh Tourism is all set to begin from today (20th) till February 26, 2019.
A week-long festival of various Classical Dance styles held annually against the spectacular backdrop of the glorious temples of Khajuraho, which stand a testimony to the glorious past of India’s cultural richness. The temple complex glows with the warmth of sandstone which is ornamented with the sinuous curves of sculpture unparalleled in their beauty.
The dances are performed in an open-air auditorium, usually in front of the Chitragupta Temple dedicated to the God Sun and the Vishvanatha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, belonging to the western group.
In an attempt to pay tribute to the Classical Dance, Music and Art of India, the first edition of Khajuraho Dance Festival was conducted in 2002. Since then, this cultural festival highlights the richness of the Indian Classical Dance styles such as Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, and Kathakali with performances of some of the best exponents in the field. Modern Indian dance has been added recently.
Khajuraho Festival of Dance is celebrated at a time when the hardness of winter begins to fade and the king of all seasons – spring, takes over. The most colorful and brilliant Classical Dance forms of India with their roots in the rich cultural traditions across the country offer a feast for the eyes during a week-long extravaganza at the temple town of Madhya Pradesh.
