Suman Billa has been appointed as the new Director General (Tourism) for the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. This appointment is part of a larger bureaucratic reshuffle, and Billa takes over from Mugdha Sinha, who has been named the Managing Director of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).
Billa’s appointment is viewed positively by the industry, with industry leaders expecting him to lead the ministry in a new wave of innovation and growth for Indian tourism.
Billa brings experience in the tourism sector, having earlier served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism from 2014 to 2019.
During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping national tourism policies and initiatives.
After his initial stint in the ministry, he served as Director of Technical Cooperation and Silk Road Development at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in Madrid, where he worked on global sustainable tourism development.
